University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education student Anna Drabek has won a David L. Boren Fellowship, awarded annually to graduate students to support specializations in country/region-specific study, language proficiency, and research that is critical to U.S. national security. The scholarship will provide a maximum of $24,000 to fund overseas study.

Drabek, from Croton-on-Hudson, NY, is studying international education development at the GSE. Her professional interests include gender equity, women's rights, youth development, and curriculum design. Her Boren Award to Benin will allow her to continue deepening her knowledge of Bariba, the language she learned while serving there as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She will also spend time interning at a well-reputed local NGO that works to further women's and girls' equality in Northern Benin. Anna holds an undergraduate degree in French and linguistics from Georgetown University.

Since 1994, over 6,000 students have received Boren Awards. Boren Scholars and Fellows represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena, and program alumni are contributing to the critical missions of agencies throughout the federal government. An independent not-for-profit founded in 1919, IIE is among the world's largest and most experienced international education and exchange organizations.
