About Scribe

Scribe Video Center is a media arts center that provides training in all aspects of time-based media production (digital video, audio, interactive media) to first time filmmakers and mid-level working media artists. Through instructional workshops, screenings with local, national and international filmmakers and community production programs we provide a venue to learn amount the craft of audio and video media making, with a particular focus on the documentary.

Scribe Summer 2025 Opportunity

Project Assistant (In-Person ONLY)

The Project Assistant position provides an opportunity to get hands-on experience working closely with Scribe staff members on various duties related to ongoing projects at a nationally recognized media arts center that promotes participatory community media production. One primary area of focus for the Project Assistant will be gathering and cataloguing oral histories and archival materials for Scribe’s Precious Places Community History Project. Precious Places is an on-going video documentary project that assists neighborhood groups in celebrating their unique histories as they explore the rich stories of their communities, including the memories, and stories held in public spaces and community landmarks. They record community histories and help define where we live at a time when so many of the city of Philadelphia’s memories are undergoing so much change. The second area of focus will be participating as an Oral History Conductor for Scribe’s Power Politics Project. Power Politics is an oral history project exploring strategies for political empowerment by historically disenfranchised communities, specifically interviewing organizers, activists, strategists and leaders in the Black, Puerto-Rican, Asian-American and other economically disadvantaged communities. 

Duties (may vary):

  • Research, contact and communicate with interview subjects
  • Outreach to communities and organizations
  • Research institutional and private archives for photos, recorded audio and documents related to issues
  • Collect video oral histories using video and audio equipment
  • Transcribe, edit and fact-check the interviews
  • Capture and record meta-data
  • Video and audio production skills
  • Video and audio editing
  • Research and write content
  • Assist in the public presentation of the work
     

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest and experience in politics, the social sciences and the humanities: (history, urban studies, anthropology.)
  • Excellent writing and verbal skills.
  • Excellent research skills as demonstrated by completed research projects.
  • Demonstrated skills with video and audio production including camera and lighting and sound production.
  • Demonstrated competency with Audacity, Hindenburg or other audio editing software, Adobe Premier Editing Software, and familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite.
