Mentor Areas
Dr. Yoona Kang’s research investigates psychological and neural mechanisms that support the development and changes in social cognition, emotions, and health outcomes. Her main research interests are in 1) linking social cognitive and affective processing in the brain to health outcomes across various developmental stages, and 2) designing interventions that guide adaptive changes in social processing to promote emotional and physical wellbeing. Yoona’s work draws conceptual and methodological tools from Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Contemplative Science, and Health Communication. She examines converging evidence across a wide range of tools, including first person reports, implicit measures, behavioral outcomes, and neuroimaging results (fMRI, fNIRS, EEG).
Description:
Assist a study examining the neurocognitive mechanisms of interpersonal communication. In our lab, we study how we can use brain data to predict real-world health outcomes.
Responsibilities include preparing study materials, recruiting and meeting with participants, and running them through the study protocol, including behavioral, fNIRS, and fMRI studies. You would also have regular meetings with your supervisor to discuss analysis and design issues related to using human neuroscience methods, as well as recent findings related to communication and social neuroscience. Opportunities for learning basic data analytical techniques or other statistical skills are also available. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in the use of functional neuroimaging techniques, and/or psychological research more generally.
Due to COVID-19, our lab is working remotely, and in-person data collection is currently paused. Interested students are welcome to contact us for a potential start date later when in-person data collection resumes. If you have any questions, please contact the CN Lab Manager at lab.manager@falklab.org
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with computer programming and statistical analyses in R are desirable but not required. It is preferred that students have taken a research methods or a statistics course. Student should have a flexible schedule, and be willing to work 7-15 hrs/week, evening and weekend availability may be necessary.
