Mentor Areas

Nursing, implementation science, health equity, firearm suicide prevention

Description:

My program of research focuses on partnering with organizations, clinicians, families, and community members to equitably implement and scale-up interventions to prevent youth suicide, with an emphasis on firearm-related lethal means safety. Firearms are now the leading cause of death for youth ages 1-19 in the U.S., with disproportionate mortality among racially and ethnically minoritized youth. Moreover, youth firearm suicide rates have increased, particularly among Black youth. Implementation science methods are well-suited to enhance the equitable development and deployment of firearm safety interventions that are attentive to context, including social, political, and historical factors that shape American’s experiences with mental health, firearms, and inequality. My portfolio of mixed methods projects explores implementation of firearm safety interventions across large health systems, sociopolitical influences on firearm use, and conceptual considerations for ethical and equitable implementation.
