Mentor Areas

My lab is interested in uncovering how our bodies defend ourselves against bacterial pathogens and how bacterial pathogens evade or manipulate immune defenses to cause disease. We are particularly interested in understanding how the innate immune system can tell the difference between disease-causing bacteria and harmless bacteria. Understanding this question is important because the innate immune system is critical for clearing infection, but an overactive immune response can lead to pathological diseases such as septic shock.
