Mentor Areas
Dr. Jenkins studies the intersection of race and policy in education. This includes examining social policy solutions aimed at improving opportunities for historically marginalized communities, such as housing and criminal legal policies, to explore how they have the potential to create new patterns of inequalities. Dr. Jenkins is a qualitative researcher who works closely with low-income communities of color to understand how such policies impact their daily lives.
Description:
This project examines a national housing initiative (i.e., Choice Neighborhood Initiative) to understand how its implementation impacts the educational opportunities of low-income Black residents. Student researchers will assist in data cleanup, coding qualitative transcripts, conducting literature reviews, and writing reports. There may be opportunities to assist in data collection (conducting semi-structured interviews). Students will also have the opportunity to travel to present research at academic conferences.
