Mentor Areas

  • Cardiac function in single ventricles
  • Torsion in various pediatric heart diseases
  • Three dimensional echocardiography

Description:

For our research we use a novel concept known as principal strain (PS). Despite extensive applications in structural engineering for studying fiber-reinforced materials, PS is a new concept in cardiology, introduced after advent of 3D speckle tracking echocardiography (3D-STE). PS is a single, maximal contractile strain that develops in 3 dimensions. It integrates circumferential (C), longitudinal (L), and C-L shear strains into a single, unidirectional deformation, expressed as PS lines. The dual concepts of myofiber orientation and contraction are unified in PS lines, that may provide insights in single right ventricle (SRV), which was not destined to be a systemic ventricle.
