Mentor Areas

The central theme of research in my laboratory is the rational design of new methods and catalysts for use in organic synthesis. As well as using traditional screening and development approaches, we employ several novel computational tools for the discovery and optimization of new reagents and catalysts. These new synthetic methods comprise the key steps in our total synthesis strategies to a variety of important pharmaceutical agents and natural products.

Description:

We are engaged in the development of new organic chemistry synthetic methods. Methods for the generation of enantiomerically pure compounds are a particular interest. We use these methods for the synthesis of novel natural products with a focus on those of biomedical relevance. There is significant interest in these methods due to their use in the the pharmaceutical industry both for the synthesis of medicinal chemistry leads and in process development.

Preferred Qualifications

Students must have completed Chem 241, 242, and 245 with passing grades. Completion of Chem 246 is desirable but not necessary. Interest in a career or graduate school in Chemistry or Biochemistry is also desirable.

Student will set up, monitor, purify, and analyze organic chemical reactions using standard laboratory techniques. Must be able to keep an accurate lab notebook and manage their time well.
