Mentor Areas
My research focuses on patient- and family-centered serious illness care, including inpatient and outpatient settings. My work includes study of 1) how patients and family members form expectations for their future health in the context of chronic serious illness, 2) the impact of family caregiving on patients and their families, 3) mental health and coping with serious illness, and 4) disparities that lead to poor health outcomes. I have expertise in decision science, bioethics, and health policy. Much of my work also relies on mixed-methods design, using qualitative research methods to understand the perspectives and stories behind quantitative data in order to solve entrenched problems. I have expertise in both urban and rural disparities and I lead a Penn working group in rural health and policy research. I offer largely work-study positions to students with some opportunities for non-work study paid positions.
Description:
Specific projects will vary (as will my ability to take on students at any given moment). I am also available for mentoring conversations even if I have no research positions available.
Preferred Qualifications
I welcome students with strong interpersonal and communication skills who can be reliable. Those familiar with qualitative research skills (classroom or prior work) often find our work a good fit.
