Mentor Areas

My broad clinical research interest is evaluating the effectiveness and unintended consequences of systems designed to improve patient safety for hospitalized children. Specific areas of focus include:

  • Rapid Response Systems
  • Medical Emergency Teams
  • Early Warning Scores
  • Physiologic Monitoring Systems
  • Alarm Fatigue
  • Electronic Health Records
  • Mobile Health (mHealth) Interventions

Description:

We perform research aimed at improving the detection and response to children deteriorating (getting dangerously ill) while hospitalized. Much of our work involves studying the interaction between care providers (like doctors and nurses) and medical devices (like physiologic monitors). Alarm fatigue is an example of the kind of work we are doing.

Preferred Qualifications

There may be occasional opportunities available for highly motivated students in the school of engineering and applied science and others interested in careers in the health sciences. We would consider students as early as the summer after their freshman year.
