Mentor Areas

Dr. Jenkins is a critical race and social policy scholar who uses critical approaches to investigate the impact of policies on Black communities. In particular, I consider how racial meaning is (re)produced through policy in education.

Description:

This qualitative research project investigates the discourses that stakeholders use to frame their arguments to support or oppose school board decisions to terminate contracts with law enforcement agencies and remove police officers from schools. The data for this project comes from video recordings of school board meetings from over 50 public school districts across the U.S. During the public comment section of the meeting, stakeholders can voice their support or opposition to policies under consideration. Student researchers will learn to analyze those videos and transcripts and code them for emergent themes. Student researchers may be able to present findings at academic conferences and write research reports and manuscripts.
