Mentor Areas
Toxicology, immunology, fetal origin of disease, endocrinology, and pharmacology
Description:
The incidence of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality are at alarmingly high rates. We aim to identify disrupted pathways in pregnancy that contribute to the development of pregnancy complications such as preterm birth, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction. Gestational exposure to environmental chemicals, maternal diseases including COVID-19 and obesity, and many other unknown factors contribute to the risk of developing pregnancy complications. Through studying human samples and using rodent models, we seek to identify novel pathways leading to placental dysfunction and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The goals of our research are to identify biomarkers to predict the development of pregnancy complications and uncover disrupted pathways that could potentially lead to novel therapeutic intervention.
