Mentor Areas
Eating disorders in adolescents: medical complications, medical treatment/management, public access to care
Description:
The Roberts Center for Pediatric Research and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has more than one opening for part-time research assistants working with Dr. Rebecka Peebles, a leader in the medical complications of eating disorders and the science of weight regulation. Dr. Peebles co-founded the Eating Disorders Assessment at Treatment Program at CHOP, one of the leading centers specializing in family-based treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with eating disorders up to 24 years of age. These are unpaid positions, but can provide valuable experience in pediatric research and biobehavioral health. New hires would be working in the Division of Adolescent Medicine, focused on bone, body composition, and metabolic outcomes in Anorexia Nervosa and other eating disorders in children, adolescents, and young adults. Dr. Peebles has an active NIH-funded study on weight change and bone in eating disorders in adolescents, and has successfully mentored many undergraduate and graduate students in clinical research.
Primary responsibilities are flexible but could include being on call for morning testing of subjects already recruited, data abstraction and data entry, possible data analysis, and assistance with future grant writing. Assistance with manuscripts is possible for those advanced students clearly demonstrating an aptitude and interest for bone health and eating disorders. A time commitment of 8-10 hours per week at minimum is expected; however, anyone interested in pursuing gap year opportunities may also consider a more part to full-time basis. Shadowing possibilities and teaching didactics exist outside of the research hours if part-time, or for volunteers working 24 or more hours/week, as part of their time in the lab each week.
If interested, please email Dr. Rebecka Peebles, the Primary Investigator of the study, at peeblesr@email.chop.edu with your resume and cover letter. Please feel free to email Dr. Peebles with any additional questions you may have about the position.
