Mentor Areas
Professor Thirumurthy’s interests lie at the intersection of economics and public health. A major focus of his research has been to use insights from economics and psychology to design and evaluate interventions to achieve better health outcomes in low-income settings. His research has also studied the economic impacts of large-scale health initiatives.
Description:
Professor Thirumurthy co-directs the Behavioral Economics and Global Health Insights (BEGIN) Lab with Professor Alison Buttenheim from Penn's School of Nursing. The BEGIN Lab is partnering with researchers and organizations in Africa and South Asia on a wider range of research projects that seek to promote healthy behavior, impact policy, and end epidemics.
Students can also be co-mentored by Dr. Alison Buttenheim, Professor of Family and Community Health at Penn Nursing and of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the Perelman School of Medicine. Professor Buttenheim also serves as Scientific Director of Penn's Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics.
