Mentor Areas

Religious Studies, including biblical studies, ancient Judaism and, unrelatedly, some background in American religion and ritual studies. As Katz Center director, Professor Weitzman has had exposure to many subfield of Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, and the study of antisemitism.

Description:

This is an open-ended internship opportunity to pursue research relevant to Jewish Studies, Religious Studies, the study of antisemitism and/or the study of Israel. The focus depends in part on the background and academic interest of the student selected for the role but may be tied to the research focus of the Katz Center's annual international fellowship program, which brings to Penn each year about 20 scholars from around the world focused on a particular theme in Jewish Studies. The fellowship is focused in 2024-25 on the role of Jews in the history and culture of medicine and health, and it will be focused in 2025-26 on the study of contemporary Jewish life. Alternatively–again depending on the background and interest of the student—the internship may support Professor's Weitzman individual research, including a project focused on how people have drawn on biblical interpretation to make sense of disaster and trauma.

Preferred Qualifications

There are no specific prerequisites for the role but an ability to work in Hebrew or other relevant languages will definitely be helpful, and please note that the role will likely involve library-based research.
