Sarah Katz

General Information

Sarah Katz was a beloved student at the University of Pennsylvania who tragically passed away in September 2022 as a third-year undergraduate. We have developed the Sarah Katz Award to honor the legacy of Sarah, an integral member of SCUE who played a pivotal role in advocating for health literacy and heart health within the Penn community. During her time in SCUE, Sarah was devoted to increasing student awareness on how to operate AEDs and perform high-quality bystander CPR. Beyond SCUE, Sarah served as a research assistant at the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP) and taught CPR to high school students and members of unserved communities as a Red Cap Ambassador for the American Heart Association. The goal of the Sarah Katz Award is to provide funding to select students who are actively involved in, or are interested in pursuing, projects designed to improve health literacy with an emphasis on heart health. We hope to recognize students who share Sarah’s dedication to advancing health literacy and heart health on our campus. See the Award Description below for more information.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Sarah Katz award, the student must be a full-time undergraduate expecting to graduate in May 2025 and beyond enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. Awards can be used for ongoing research, individual projects, or community outreach initiatives that are to be initiated within one year of receiving the award. Examples of such initiatives include, but are not limited to, performing research in the intersection of cardiovascular health literacy, initiating outreach efforts, and creating informational resources that can be distributed, among others. Note that awards cannot be used for single events (such as one-day volunteering events) or as an academic/tuition stipend. Award recipients may receive up to $5,000 in funding towards their proposed budgets.
