General Information
The Howard C. Herrmann Student Research Fellowship will provide opportunities for undergraduate students to work full-time for 10 weeks during the summer on a cardiovascular research project in one of the laboratories or clinical research groups associated with the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Nursing, School of Veterinary Medicine, or Perelman School of Medicine. Up to two student awards will be issued each year, with a stipend to the student of $8,000.
The fellowship honors Dr. Herrmann, who joined the Cardiovascular Division of Penn in 1987 and has served for close to 40 years as an interventional cardiologist with clinical research interests in structural and valvular heart disease. He is the John W. Bryfogle endowed professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and has served as the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories and Section Chief for Interventional Cardiology for more than 20 years.He was the first recipient of Penn’s Louis Duhring Outstanding Clinical Specialist Award and authored or coauthored more than 500 articles on numerous topics in cardiology including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, platelet inhibition, balloon valvuloplasty, acute MI management, and other new interventional techniques.
The goal of the fellowship is to preserve Dr. Herrmann’s legacy as an innovator and clinician by supporting and encouraging exceptional students to pursue a career in teaching, research, and patient care with the potential to impact how we treat and prevent cardiovascular diseases.
Eligibility Guidelines
University of Pennsylvania 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year undergraduates are invited to apply.
Research Focus
Awards are to fund undergraduate research with the potential to advance cardiovascular medicine. Research can be lab-based or clinical within any department at Penn.

Applications will be submitted through Google Forms. Please prepare the following (no more than 3 pages):
- Applicant details: First name, Last name, email address, phone number, expected year of graduation, major/minor and brief bio (1/2 page maximum)
- Personal statement describing research experience, career goals, and how the fellowship will advance the applicant’s goals (1 page maximum
- If available, a brief description of the research project plan, including research question, objectives, methodology and potential impact (1 page maximum)
In addition, please supply:
- Statement from sponsor in support of the project and applicant
- One letter of recommendation (can be from the research sponsor if they have previously worked with you) that can address your academics, research goals, career plans (please avoid family members or high school teachers)
- Curriculum vitae

Monitoring Progress Post-Award
A final report summarizing the results, preferably a poster potentially suitable for submission to a conference, will be due at the end of the fellowship. Your report should also include how the fellowship helped you to develop on a more personal or professional level.
