Matthew Calumpit, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences from Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, has been awarded a 2026–27 Princeton in Asia Fellowship. He will teach neuroscience in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
A neuroscience major, Calumpit has focused his research on epidemiology and health disparities affecting Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations. As a 2024 Scholar with the Stanford Center for Asian Health Research and Education, he has co-authored multiple publications on mortality, opioid polysubstance use, cancer disparities, and neurosurgical outcomes.
Calumpit has also been a leader on campus. As President of the Penn Hawaiʻi Club, he helped secure recognition and resources for Penn’s first Pasifika cultural organization. He has served as a teaching assistant for several courses and received the Chemistry Department’s 2025 Exceptional Service and Teaching Award.
Calumpit eventually plans to pursue medical school and continue advancing global health equity. Through Princeton in Asia, he will gain international teaching experience while furthering his commitment to education and public health.
