The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania offers travel grants to support undergraduate students who are presenting original research at academic conferences. These grants help offset travel-related expenses and provide students with the opportunity to engage with broader academic communities in their field.
Students may apply for funding only for conferences that will take place before their anticipated graduation date. Applications for conferences that have already occurred will not be considered. Each student is eligible to receive one College travel grant during their undergraduate career. Applicants must be undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Funding is limited, and priority is given to students with demonstrated financial need, as determined by Student Records and Financial Services. Students are encouraged to first seek support from their department, program, or lab before applying to the College. The research being presented must be directly related to the student’s declared major or minor, and must be conducted under the mentorship of Penn faculty or Penn-affiliated faculty.
Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis, with submission deadlines occurring near the end of October, November, January, and March. Specifically, submissions will be accepted up to the following dates: October 20, November 30, February 1, and May 1. Submissions received by these dates will be considered in that quarter’s review cycle.
To apply, students must submit an online application through the link below and upload the following materials to the application:
- A letter of recommendation from either their research mentor or their undergraduate department/program chair
- An abstract of the research presentation
- Proof of acceptance to the conference
- A detailed budget outlining anticipated expenses, including registration fees, lodging, travel (airfare and ground transportation), and any funding already received from their department, program, or lab
Please note that travel grant awards may be subject to tax reporting requirements, depending on the recipient’s residency status and the amount awarded. Students with questions about tax implications may contact the University’s Corporate Tax, Compliance, and Payroll Office.
