WXPN Summer 2023 Internships

Editorial Content Writer (In-Person ONLY)
If you have a passion for music, a background in writing and a working knowledge of social media, we want to hear from you. WXPN is seeking an Editorial Content Writing intern to contribute to the XPN.ORG Music News section dedicated to the local and national music scene. Interns will write short-form posts covering new music, tour announcements, show previews, concert reviews, record reviews, news updates, and more.

Duties:

Blog about music for the WXPN music blog including tour announcements, show previews, concert reviews, record reviews, news updates, and more.

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a familiarity with the Philadelphia music community and a robust knowledge of current music in general, specifically the music played by WXPN. The ability to monitor trends both locally and nationally and pitch coverage relevant to our audience – both short form as well as long-form – is essential. Qualified candidates will have a background in music and music journalism (editing experience is a plus), must be conversant with the music blogosphere for information-gathering, and must have a working knowledge in online publication platforms (specifically WordPress).

Morning Show News Writer (In-Person or Remote Eligible)

Duties:

Research and write news stories for XPN Morning Show. May be asked to attend city and/or suburban press conferences & record interviews. Position may include editing interviews into sound bites for newscasts depending on knowledge of digital audio editor.

Qualifications:  

Candidate must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Candidate should be familiar with XPN/NPR style of news writing and be able to re-write copy. An interest in the music industry is a plus. Candidate must be enthusiastic, a quick learner, and a self-starter. Candidate must have basic computer skills and knowledge of office procedures. Knowledge of digital audio editing systems a plus!

World Cafe Programming (In-Person or Remote Eligible)

Duties:

Programming Interns support WXPN's NPR syndicated radio show, World Cafe, through a broad range of tasks including:

  • Artist relations: Host recording artists on site, load-in and load-out, coordinate hospitality
  • Prepare and schedule World Cafe playlists using Microsoft Excel and GSelector music scheduling software Write on-air copy to promote upcoming World Cafe guests
  • Create and distribute World Cafe episode rundowns (timings and cues) for affiliate stations 
  • Compile press and background info on artists through extensive online research
  • Monitor World Cafe broadcast schedule and inform guests of air dates
  • Other duties as needed, including general clerical tasks

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will be self-starters with exceptional attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and an ability to work independently. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications preferred. An interest in exploring a career in media/entertainment and a familiarity with the music of WXPN and World Cafe are desirable.
