Penn is a power house for research, but can seem daunting at first. CURF is the best place to get started and I quickly realized that my freshman year. I applied to a few science research positions straight from the website and eventually was placed into the C-SURE neuroscience program that is part of the CONTE center at Penn my freshman summer. For half the time I experienced medical research on mice that targeted the Shank3 genes known to have associations with schizophrenia. I learned about multiple experiments done on the mice that yield valuable data for later phase 2 and phase 3 trials on drugs. The remainder of my summer was spent with patients. I assisted in attaching electrodes to patients, reading EEG and fMRI data, and analyzing the data through computational methods such as high resolution photo imaging and running scripts to compile data. I also assisted Dr. Bruce Turetsky, Dr. Rubin Gur, and Dr. Dan Wolf with their research endeavors on Schizophrenia and potential other neurological diseases. CURF also granted funding to a start-up that I assist with under Dr. Brian Torcato known as the Autism Telemedicine Company that seeks to reduce diagnosis times and increase accessibility of autism treatment. Please reach out with any questions on applications or the best way to approach research here at Penn!
