Mentor Areas
Law, Political Science, Business.
Description:
This is a short-term commitment for 1 to 2 weeks (approximately 40 hours) this summer (2026) for a Wharton student who is a self-starter with a working knowledge of how to use the Bloomberg Terminal. The Borders and Boundaries research group headed by Beth Simmons has a list of firms that plausibly vie in the border security space for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contracts and wants to understand their competitors. The goal is to describe competitive (and sometimes cooperative) business networks that seek DHS contracts. We will provide you with a list of firms. You will need to determine whether the firm is publicly traded, identify the stock ticker, and find the firm on the Bloomberg Terminal. Then, using Bloomberg, you need to identify the firm’s closest competitors and compile these competitors, along with some basic information about the competitors, into an excel spreadsheet. We envision intensive work for one week at a competitive Penn undergraduate RA wage.
Preferred Qualifications
- Undergraduate Wharton student
- Familiarity with the Bloomberg terminal/database
- Excellent MS Excel skills
- Self-starter; reliable completion in a timely manner.
