Mentor Areas

I work at the intersection of literary studies, sociology of culture, and digital humanities.  I have a particular interest in the way literature is shaped by ratings, rankings, and other systems of reward and esteem.  My best known book is The Economy of Prestige, a study of prizes and awards in literature and the arts.

Description:

I founded the Price Lab for Digital Humanities.  I conduct research that involves gathering and analyzing data about reviews and ratings of contemporary literature, film, and art.  I will be on leave in 2024-25, but may be hiring one or two students during the academic year to assist with specific tasks.  If you are interested, send me a note about your interests and qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Humanities majors interested in doing some basic data science, or students in CIS or computational social sciences who have interest in contemporary literature, music, and film. Some experience working with Excel and databases is essential; data visualization skills and basic proficiency with Python are a plus.  Students pursuing the minor in Digital Humanities are especially encouraged to apply.
