Mentor Areas

book history, media studies, history of computing, digital humanities, history of prisons

Description:

I write and make digital projects about the history of various text technologies, from the printing press to e-books and ASCII. I'm especially keen to work with students interested in learning how to work with and research rare books and archival materials, vintage/early computing technologies, or women making media (scrapbooking, zines, outsider art). I also mentor in digital humanities and am happy to chat with students about DH classes or the minor.

My most active current project, which is always seeking students, is called Printing in Prisons. It is responsible for digitizing and indexing the articles published in newsletters that were written, edited, and printed by men incarcerated at Eastern State Penitentiary between the 1930s and 1960s. Students can be involved at any level, from data entry and cleanup to building exhibits from their original research.
