Mentor Areas
I've spent my career studying the history of schools and universities, especially the ways that Americans have debated the purposes of these institutions.
Description:
"Infectious Lessons" examines the history of epidemics and education in the United States, from smallpox outbreaks at Harvard in the 1700s to the COVID-19 crisis of 2020-21. Drawing on a wide range of archival sources, the project will explore how schools and universities tried to contain disease and how they explained its causes, remedies, and meaning to the students in their charge. Students will research medical and educational journals and other online periodicals.
