Mentor Areas

  • History of early modern India, 1500 - 1850; gender; politics; social history; ecology and political geography.
  • Social history of culture in India; mass culture in the twentieth century; history and memory.

Description:

Who were the writers for Hindi films between the 1930s and 1970s? What kinds of social backgrounds did they come from? What drew them to cinema? And how did they find a foothold in the Hindi film world? To help answer these questions, student researchers will:

  • Assemble information about key figures in Hindi cinema between 1930 and 1980, especially writers -- of scripts, screenplays, dialogue, and of lyrics for songs.
  • Assemble information about towns and cities which produced these writers, from government data.
  • Prepare digital maps and charts of various kinds with above data.

This project can work remotely or online only, if necessary.
