Mentor Areas

Our research focuses on broad fields of neuroscience in nutrition, addressing debilitating side effects such as nausea, loss of appetite, and vomiting associated with chemotherapy using a variety of animal models.

Description:

Assist Senior Lab Members – Most of your time in the lab will be spent assisting senior lab members with their projects.  You’ll be helping us with everything from maintaining our vivarium space, to performing IHC/PCR techniques, to administering injections, to imaging slides and analyzing data (don’t worry, you’ll know what all of that means soon enough).  What you’re doing on a day to day basis will depend on the projects going on in the lab and your ability to perform techniques.

Assist with Animal Husbandry – In the De Jonghe Lab, we work with three species of small mammal:  Rats, mice, and musk shrews.  We are responsible for the health and wellbeing of all of our animals housed in our satellite housing rooms.  As an undergrad, you’ll learn how to take care of the animals, maintain the space, and record behavioral data from animal experiments

Maintain the Wet Lab Space – Tidying up the lab space is a great thing to do if you find yourself with any downtime.  There are almost always ‘dishes’ that need to be cleaned and the lab space can never be ‘too clean’.

Attend Lab Meetings – Lab meetings are held once a week and your attendance is highly encouraged!  Lab meeting is the primary time for us to make the schedule, present data, troubleshoot problems, plan experiments , and just generally do the brainstorming behind the science.  We understand that your schedule is variable and you won’t always be able to make it, but we’d love to see you at lab meetings as often as possible.
