Mentor Areas

Farmland preservation has the potential to be effective in limiting the outward spread of sprawl in metropolitan areas as a key strategy in farmland preservation is the creation of large contiguous blocks of preserved land. This growth management technique has been used in many locations in the United States, but has not been well analyzed and evaluated.

Description:

I would like to work with a student would use Geographic Information Systems and the FRAGSTATS program to measure the degree of fragmentation of preserved farmland in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I can help the student obtain the data and would work with the student in writing up the results. The goal would be to create either a conference paper or a journal article or both.
