Mentor Areas
Polyhedral Structures Laboratory (PSL) is an interdisciplinary research lab connecting architecture, structural engineering, computer science, mathematics and material science to enrich architectural geometry and to reconcile function, form, and technology. PSL aims to bridge the gap between architecture and structural design using geometry, which is considered the common language between these two inextricable disciplines. At PSL we intend to push the boundaries of research in the field of architectural technology, and we are continually looking for teams and individuals to interact with across various academic disciplines.
Description:
Projects will vary. Interested students should contact us to discuss possibilities.
Assembling the robotically-cut glass: Undergraduate students will participate in the fabrication process of the prototype in small and large scales. In small scale, this participation will include responsibilities to produce corner scaffolds for glass blocks using various additive manufacturing machines. Configuring the 3D printers to effectively correspond to the resolution of the final prototypes might be done by undergraduate students. In some simple cases, there is a possibility to involve undergraduate students in the robotic fabrication of the parts. This task will require specific training for the undergraduates will take place in the summer.
FEM analysis and numerical modeling: Research involves extensive studies on the mechanical behavior of sheet materials that involves geometric modeling, computational design and numeral analysis of sandwich polyhedral structures with thin glass plates. Thus, it will be an excellent opportunity for an undergraduate student to become familiar with the structural performance of such novel structural systems.
