Emily Zhang
Hello! I’m a senior at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Systems Science Engineering and Bioengineering (‘26), with minors in Computer Science and Mathematics. At the Penn Image and Computing Laboratory (PICSL), I conduct research under Dr. Alison Pouch on deep learning–based pose estimation for cardiac ultrasound transducer orientation. I have also worked on image registration of Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) and Computed Tomography (CT) for standardized alignment of bicuspid aortic valve defects. Previously, I was an undergraduate researcher in the Bio2 Lab under Dr. Riccardo Gottardi at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, developing gradient porous scaffolds for osteochondral defect repair using cell culture, PCR, and histology techniques.
From meeting new people to learning new skills, research has definitely been a huge part of my experience here at Penn and I’m excited to continue exploring the intersections of medicine and engineering! Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions—whether it’s about finding research opportunities, funding, or if you simply want to chat!
