Hi! My name is Hemza, and I’m incredibly excited to serve as a Research Peer Advisor. I’ve been fortunate to work across several interdisciplinary research projects, and am looking forward to supporting you all in navigating your research journeys!

One of the aspects I enjoy most about research is the opportunity for collaboration. Working closely with others has allowed me to build meaningful relationships that go far beyond the scope of any single project. Here, I’ve also gained mentors whose guidance has shaped both my personal and professional growth, and whose support continues to influence me. Collaboration has also connected me with people from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, broadening the way I approach problems. To me, these relationships are an incredibly rewarding part of the research process.

Early in my time at Penn, I joined a clinical research team studying Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). Here, we evaluated both the effectiveness of splenectomy as a treatment for relapsed TTP and the diagnostic accuracy of rapid ADAMTS13 assays. I’ve also worked on research analyzing how liver disease patients are treated for complications to generate insights that can inform evidence-based health policy reforms.

Whether you’re looking for help with finding labs that suit your interests, navigating how to get involved in research for the first time, or balancing your other responsibilities, I’m happy to help!
