Sarah Cornelius (COL '18) wins Truman Scholarship

University of Pennsylvania student Sarah Cornelius, a junior in the School of Arts & Sciences, has been awarded a Harry S. Truman Scholarship. This merit-based award supports college students who plan to pursue careers in government or public service or who wish to attend graduate or professional school to help prepare for their careers and are United States citizens or U.S. nationals. Cornelius is among 60 students awarded Truman Scholarships this year and is the 23rd Truman Scholar from Penn since 1981.

2017-2018 Penn Fulbright Finalists

Penn students and alumni are starting to be offered Fulbright grants for the 2017-18 academic year. This list will be updated as we hear back from host countries over the next several months.

Michael Tran Duong and Tiberiu Mihaila win Goldwater Scholarship

University of Pennsylvania students Michael Tran Duong, class of 2019, and Tiberiu Mihaila, class of 2019, have been awarded the Goldwater Scholarship. Additionally, Congzhou Sha, class of 2018, has received an honorable mention from the Goldwater committee.

Jordan Doman (C'17) wins Hertz Fellowship

Jordan Doman (C’17), of Monroeville, PA, has been selected as one of only twelve recipients of the prestigious Hertz Fellowship by the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. The 12 newest Hertz Fellows were chosen from more than 700 applicants interested in pursuing graduate work in applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics and engineering.

Drew Hasson (COL '14) named a Yenching Scholar

University of Pennsylvania alumnus Drew Hasson, of Dallas, TX, has been named a Yenching Scholar at the Yenching Academy of Peking University. At the Yenching Academy, Hasson will pursue an economics and management concentration to investigate how the rapid proliferation of digital devices across China has stabilized the workforce at the fringe of society. He will join others in the third cohort of the Yenching Scholarship program during the 2017-2018 academic year enrolled in an English language Master of China Studies program.

The full crop of 2016-17 Penn Fulbrighters

The Fulbright Program, which operates in over 160 countries worldwide, is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. For the past several years running, the University of Pennsylvania has been a top-ten producer of Fulbright Students among U.S. colleges and universities. Last year, 22 Fulbright U.S. Student Awards were awarded to Penn students and alumni to conduct independent research, pursue graduate study, or teach English abroad. Fulbright recipients for grant year 2017-2018 will be announced on a rolling basis this spring.

Lucy Chai (EAS '17) receives Churchill Scholarship

University of Pennsylvania senior Lucy Chai of Acton, Mass., has received a Churchill Scholarship from the Winston Churchill Foundation. She is among 15 recipients of the honor, awarded annually to American students to fund a year of master’s study in science, mathematics and engineering at the University of Cambridge’s Churchill College.
