Computational and Genomic Medicine
Integrating genomics, big data, and computing to drive medical innovations
Pregnancy and Pre-Term Birth Research
Dr. Simmons' main research interests are focused on the causal mechanistic links between the intrauterine milieu and type II diabetes and obesity in the adult with a focus on epigenetics and mitochondria function; the mechanisms underlying in utero exposures to environmental chemicals and the link to the later development of diabetes and obesity; the mechanisms underlying preterm birth.
Structural and functional understanding of TRP channels
The major goal of projects in the laboratory is to establish a detailed structural understanding of the mechanisms of TRP channels activation, desensitization and inhibition, which will help facilitate rational drug design for several human disease. We use cryo electron microscopy as a major tool to study TRP channels.
General Neurology and Perioperative Neurology and Neurophysiology
Our current program is beginning several clinical projects in the area of migraine, neurologic complications of surgery and neurophysiology.
Improving Home-Assisted Ventilation in Chronic Respiratory Failure
Improving home respiratory care for chronic respiratory failure.
Research on RNA features that function in post-transcriptional regulation
RNA biology to engineer mores stress resistant organisms.
Metabolic Homeostasis in Visual Function
Implications of lipid deposition for age-related eye disease.
Translational Research on Bioactive Lipids and Molecular Clocks
A highly translational approach to the study of bioactive lipids and molecular clocks using diversified platform technologies.
Animal Disease Spread and Farm Animal Welfare
My research focuses on practical ways to improve farm animal welfare that can be implemented within farming systems.
Pediatric Antimicrobial Pharmacology and Pharmacoepidemiology
Our lab is focused on improving the safety and effectiveness of antimicrobial administration in pediatric patients. We study the pharmacology, adverse drugs effects, and optimal dosing of antibiotics in children.
